I’m looking to buy a 96 Civic, and today test drove the DX two-door.
However, given the stats etc from Edmund’s, I think I’m more interested in
the HX – power steering standard, higher mileage, bigger engine… The
dealer told me I simply couldn’t get one in Massachusetts, couldn’t order
one – and that I probably couldn’t find one here at all. Is this true?
Would I be able to find one more easily in Austin Texas – or thereabouts?
(I’m moving.) Advice, comments … Thanks.

Get an EX. I have an HX, and I’m only getting around 33 MPG driving mostly on
the highway. I also find that if I’m accelerating in 4th or 5th gear, there
is a "deadspot" at 2800-3000 RPM, meaning it will stop accelerating or even
slow down at this engine speed. I have to gear down, speed up and then shift
back up to get around this spot. Once above 3000, the valve timing changes and
there’s lots of power. I find that having to do this is really annoying, and
not normal. I’m bringing it in to the dealer this weekend, but I find that
having to bring a new car with less than 2000 miles on it to the dealer is
unacceptable.

Most dealers will make you pay list price (or close to it) for the HX
because it’s the "hot new technology" and the car is scarce. I agree with
the advice to get an EX (if you can afford it — but you should be able to
deal on the EX, whereas they might not give discounts on the HX). It comes
with all the toys, and my husband gets 32 MPG on his (city driving). The
power moonroof is great, and the VTEC engine is very peppy. Plus, if
you’re moving to Texas, you need the air conditioning!

"Dealing on an EX"? Good luck! Best I got a dealer to go was just
below MSRP. This is southern california where we’ve got more
dealer than ants in my yard it seems. The car’s for my mom in
Washington St. and using the internet service (off the Edmunds page)
I got a dealer in Bellevue, Wash to go down to MSRP. The one
is Bremerton, Wash (where my mom lives) starts to dicker $2500 over
MSRP, and they sell them off the lot _fast_.
The LX-A and LX-O are non existent and the LX/DX are also way up
there. Good business for AHM and the dealers I guess!
OTOH, they are dealing on the Accords, specially that ‘value
package’ DX with the AC/AT/upgrade stereo and paint. A top Civic
EX is going out the door about the low end Accords. Which is
where mom is header.
The HX? I haven’t seen any, which leads me to believe that they
won’t deal too much if at all on them. Short supply, you know!

FYI, as I previously posted in this thread, Got my civic EX
Coupe (manual no addons) for $800 below MSRP, with free mats
This was 2 1/2 weeks ago. I live in central CA.

Agree, dealers are pushing accords! DEALER REBATES

I wanted to get the Honda Civic Coupe HX, but was told that they weren’t
even offering it because "they ran into a few problems". So, I’m leasing
the DX. Very nice drive – and MPG has saved me many trips to the gas
station. I do get a little annoyed at the pick up. It’s not the
strongest engine; however, it does gain momentum, and the you really soar.
I can do 80 miles without realizing it.

Cute. Yes, there have been a few problems. Mostly those problems are
that there simply aren’t enough Civics this year, and there aren’t
anywhere NEAR enough HX Civics. Don’t even ask about the HX CVT. The
other problems have to do with the fact that even the high-volume
dealerships aren’t getting allocated any at all for the rest of the year,
and thus they can’t sell you one. I’m unimpressed that your dealer was
less than honest about it.

At leat you folks in the USA had a shot at the HX. Up here, Honda Canada
didn’t even bother selling it, saving the supply, I guess, for America.
BTW, my local dealer tells me in this part of the world anything Civic
with four doors on it is a sell out. It’ll be months before they can get a
re-supply of these hot items.

That part of the world being North America, not just Canada. And you’ll
eventually get the CVT, so that’s not a big deal, is it? My point is that
the Si is available there, which is personally the more interesting
vehicle….
Paul, who words things poorly at night.

The Si in Canada is essentially a rebadged EX in the USA.

But we don’t get the Si hatchback here – I thought Canada still did.

Nope, Honda dropped the DX, Si versions on the Hatchback due to
insufficient demand.
